PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP announced a Grasp on funding to the World Health Organization on Monday as the U.S. topped 25,000 deaths in the coronavirus.
“With the outbreak of this COVID-19 pandemic, we have deep concerns if America’s generosity has been placed to the best use potential,” Trump said through a day press conference from the White House Rose Garden. “The reality is that the WHO didn’t satisfactorily obtain, vet and share information in a timely and transparent fashion.”
Trump said that a review will be conducted to evaluate the firm’s”role in mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus.”
The president declared last week that he had been considering quitting the funds, calling the company”China-centric” amid criticism that it chased Beijing’s attempts to conceal details regarding the early spread of this virus.
Even the U.S. is WHO’s largest contributor, providing almost 15 percent of its funds, according to the group’s site.
Specifically, Trump called outside the early opposition of the organization to travel limitations. He also said,”a lot more lives” could have been spared if other countries closed their borders into China. Keeping travel open was”one of the wonderful tragedies” in the first days of the outbreak, he explained.
“Border management is essential to virus control,” he said.
He accused of pushing misinformation regarding the virus out of China WHO.
“The WHO hasn’t addressed a single one of these concerns, nor provided a serious explanation that acknowledges its own mistakes, of which there were lots of,” Trump said.
Trump said that his administration would continue to participate with the WHO to see if it could make”meaningful reforms,” but”for now,” that the U.S. will discuss how to divert the cash with different nations and global health partners.
It’s uncertain how the group will be affected by the pause funding . WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus prevented a question about the subject on Monday, saying he has a”very good” relationship with Trump and that he expected the funding would stay.
